“Careers with an English Major: Navigating the Literary Landscape” Panel Discussion Review

I chose to watch and analyze this particular panel discussion because as an English major, I know how difficult it can be to search for a career that utilizes many of the skills learned in the degree. My goal was to find answers on what exactly an English major needs to do in order to find a career related to their degree, and where to look. After watching this panel, I feel well equipped and more prepared to search for an English related career.

Unfortunately this panel was pre-recorded, so I was unable to ask any questions. However, it was still a very helpful resource that I am grateful exists for anyone to watch online.

This panel discussion was conducted by the University of North Georgia’s Career Services department and was specifically catered to the English majors at their school. The panelists that they invited to present were Natalie Dalton, the Director of Human Resources and Attorney Recruiting for the Oberman Law Firm, Angela DeClaires who works with BookLogix Publishing Services, Inc., and Matt Aiken, who works for the Dahlonega Nugget.

One of the biggest takeaways that I learned from this panel interview is that experience matters. Angela DeClaires discussed for several minutes the importance of having not only experience in writing, but also in internships. Matt Aiken followed with an emphasis on providing proof of your experience and work. He mentioned how he would be more willing to hire a college student on if they provided pictures and detailed evidence of their past work. Many English majors are instructed with creating a portfolio of some sort, and according to this panel, that is a very admirable and impressive feature to include on your resume.

After finishing the panel, I feel equipped and motivated to continue building my portfolio for future career options. I also feel prepared to focus on building my experience before I approach the workforce.
